I have a confession to make… I like and wear trends. Now, I know that a lot of my posts have been about forgoing seasonal styles and really developing your own personal aesthetic and to live beyond the latest insta-fad. I also still very much believe in this philosophy of dressing.
However, working as a fashion editor I am surrounded by newness, the latest shoe style, the coolest bag, the must-have dress of next season. I see the trends before they are trends, think of an editor as a fortune teller, we don’t really look into the future but we take queue’s of what is happening now and make predictions for what is to come. Just like the part from The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly explains the importance of cerulean and how a trend moves through the market. What is on today’s runway is in tomorrow’s TJ Maxx.
That, however, is not totally the truth anymore. What was once only a privilege of industry insiders has now become democratized. With the rise of fashion blogs and social media personalities, former fashion gatekeepers see what is coming right alongside everyone else. This is beginning to force brands to rethink their strategies when deciding how to show collections, with many moving to “a see now/buy now format”. So with the trickle down flow of fashion broken, how do you discover the latest and greatest trend?
Thus enters the influencer (bloggers, youtubers, editors, and other social media gurus) that dominate our Instagram feeds and social media platforms with their idyllic lives and totally envious aesthetics. This is where a trend is now born in the digital age, but not everyone is the same and what was once a carefully crafted fashion page in a magazine with direct advice on how to create a look for all people now becomes one image of a pretty person in a pretty look that may or may not work for you.
So how do you make a trend work for your own aethestic? The quickest and easiest answer to this question is find an influencer that has a personal taste similar to what you want to be and “steal their style”. But that’s boring and leads to the awful situation of stagnation of fashion innovation. So how do you wear a trend and truly make it your own? Research.
Read and consume as much as you can. Whether fashion magazines, blogs, social media, history books, visiting plays and museums, scouring vintage shops. Chances are if you like a specific style it has been worn before. See how multiple people choose to put the same piece together. Also play around with fashion, when you take the pressure off of looking a certain way it opens you up to new ways to express yourself and who knows maybe we all will be looking to you for the next trend.
